World Breastfeeding Week 2019
I am Rebekah, a Birth photographer based in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. I am not a mother myself, but the journey of a mother who breastfeeds, is definitely one of my favourite parts of motherhood, and photographing motherhood. My mum breastfed my brother and I for a few weeks, but had to move to bottle-feeding due to complications, so I know it wasn’t easy.
Motherhood photography is very special to me. It’s something I can’t put into words. To see mothers carry their babies, birth their babies and care for their babies. It’s a transformational story, and it’s magical to watch. Every woman is different, and may have less or more benefits of breastfeeding, but that is the beauty of breastfeeding. Every breastfeeding story is different.

So that’s when I reached out and asked for five women to help me create a vision I had – breastfeeding women in the forest and in the beach; breastfeeding in public. I hope every person that reads this post, and views the images, feels the power of a breastfeeding mother like I have.
I asked these women, who didn’t know each other, to meet me at Crawfordsburn Country Park, one Friday evening so that I could use our ‘golden hour’ skies to capture the essence of their beauty and breastfeeding.
Mothers face a lot of challenges in the early days, especially with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding doesn’t just mean that baby can have the best nutrition from their baby. It means that baby can bond with mummy. It promotes skin-to skin contact, whether mummy chooses to feed on the sofa, in bed, out with her friends, on the plane, anywhere.

The World Breastfeeding Week (1st to 7th of August 2019) has been put in place to encourage more mothers to support and uplift each other and try breastfeeding. It’s also there to educate and inform those who turn their noses up, who ask mothers to cover themselves and to show that breastfeeding is a normal, natural process that mothers can try, and see what works for them.
Whatever way you feed your baby, I know it’s with love (and I would love to hear your stories on alternative feeding methods too!)
But, for now… I am so excited to share with you this ‘Mini Series’ of images, to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August). Breastfeeding is a great opportunity to sit down and ‘reconnect’ with your child or children and renew that bonding experience that started from birth or even before.
**In celebration of WBW I will also be offering personalized Public Breastfeeding sessions, with an additional gift until 31st August.
